How to Read a Tape Measure Test

Have you ever really learned how to READ A TAPE MEASURE? I have broken it down for you and given you a visual so you don't have to "count the little lines" any more!

I take a confession!!  I struggle (or struggled until recently) to read a tape measure.  In my defence force I had never been taught what all the "lilliputian lines" meant.  I knew the the basics…1/4, i/2, iii/4 and inches,  but the other lines were always a mystery.  If I had to measure something that didn't autumn inside one of those marks I would just mark the record mensurate with a pencil or count the lines…you know it might be 32″ and 3 niggling lines.  (Pretty embarrassing, correct!)

My guess is that many of you are in the aforementioned boat as me.  And then, I thought we could do a fiddling: How To Read a Record Measure 101.

(For all of yous mathematically inclined people, please ignore my simplistic interruption down of an already bones record! You tin can just skip alee to another projection! 😉 )

This is what  helped me, seeing it broken down…I'm a visual learner.  Every single line on the record measure tin be broken downward into 16ths.This trivial bit of noesis is what I was missing.

The 16ths tin be reduced into 8ths, similar the picture above.  Makes sense right?  And those 8ths can exist broken downwardly fifty-fifty more, until yous get to 4ths and a ane/2.

If yous look at the flick below y'all tin see how this all makes sense.  Shortest lines are the 16ths, going upwardly in length to 8ths, 4ths, one/ii and inch.

I realize this is unproblematic in one case y'all intermission it down, but in order to exist able to measure out something and spout off the Right measurement without counting the lines every fourth dimension (maybe it's but me) I need it to exist broken downward.

Now information technology's just a memorization game.  Before long, information technology will come natural but until and so you tin can reference this diagram. 🙂

Since we are on the field of study, I though you lot might like to know about this particular QuickDraw Self-Marker Record Measure!  Information technology makes marking off cuts a piece of cake (or and so they claim)!!!  I ordered one but it'due south on back order then as soon as I get it, I'll share my findings.

Happy measuring!
